‘Slight Pepper’ wins in Toronto

Monday, October 24 2011

Audiences at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) received a good “trini” dose of Doubles With Slight Pepper as the short film of the same name was awarded the coveted “Best Canadian Short” for the 2011 TIFF Short Cuts lineup.

The production was selected as a 2011 recipient of grant funding under the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company’s (TTFC) Production Assistance and Script Development (PASD) Programme. As one of 31 productions to receive support this year, Doubles features young actor Sanjiv Boodhu as ‘Dhani’, a young man who must decide if he will help save his estranged father, Ragbir (Errol Sitahal). Will Dhani set aside his hatred and begin a new relationship with his father?

Producer Ian Harnarine describes the story as one “that explores the intrinsic bonds both physical and emotional between family”. Look out for “seconds” and “thirds” of Doubles With Slight Pepper which is expected to be released officially in 2012.

JUST IN! DOUBLES takes Best Short Award at Toronto International Film Festival

WOW.  We are incredibly proud and humbled by the news that DOUBLES just received the Best Short Award from the Jury at the 2011Toronto International Film Festival!

The jury remarked, “…Through the very humble but moving story of a family in crisis, this film expresses truths that resonate in Canada and around the world. It is the debut of an exciting new voice from whom we hope to see a great deal more…”

Thank you to the cast, crew, supporters and to all of the wonderful people we met at TIFF this year.  More news coming soon.

Any Press Is Good Press

Bruce Kirkland is one of Canada’s most respected critics and he did everyone a favor by writing about the shorts Programme’s at TIFF.
He said this about our film: "Ian Harnarine’s Doubles with Slight Pepper, a complex and compelling Trinidadian tale about a father returning from Canada to a resentful family."

Brief and to the point, I dig.

Talent Lab

I’ve been selected to take part in this year’s Talent Lab at the Toronto International Film Festival. It’s a program for emerging filmmakers.

Talent Lab is an intensive four-day artistic development programme that provides emerging talent with an unparalleled opportunity to learn from the world’s best film artists.

Using the Festival’s outstanding relationships with acclaimed filmmakers, Talent Lab leads participants in group discussions on a range of topics focused on the artistic side of filmmaking, sharpening the skills and confidence of a new generation of filmmakers.

Really excited to be taking part in this amazing opportunity.

Shipping Day

The last few days have been a bit frazzled, but we finally shipped our tapes out to TIFF for the Festival. Although it’s a long ways away, they need things in advance because of the sheer number of films and to ensure quality.

I had some setbacks this weekend while finishing it off because a few of the HDCAM decks at NYU (where we are using the post-production facilities) refused to act properly. The great people that work there are amazing so we got it off finally!

It’s a strange feeling when the thing you’ve worked on for month and months is in the form of a tangible tape.

Bon Voyage tapes, next time I’ll see you will be in Toronto.

Sound Mix Complete

Today I worked with Paul Bercovitch to finish off the sound mix for the film. Paul is a sound genius – brought out so much in the film. All of the dialogue & music sounds great. It’s very tedious work but affords a lot of creativity and it makes a huge difference. It’s going to sound amazing in that big cinema!
