Doubles with Slight Pepper was written and directed by Ian Harnarine. It was shot in March 2011 at various locations throughout the island of Trinidad. Using an entirely local cast the shoot lasted for 7 days. The film was made possible with generous contributions from The Spike Lee Production Fund and The Trinidad & Tobago Film Company.

The film tells the story of Dhani who struggles to support himself and his mother by selling doubles (Trinidad’s quintessential street food) in rural Trinidad. When his estranged father returns from Canada unexpectedly, Dhani must decide if he will help save his father’s life despite their strained relationship.

    Hello,

I saw this last night at TIFF. It definitely stood out from the collection screened in the series. I felt it had a sense of visceral authenticity that made it feel very real and gave it a sense of hope; a sentiment I heard echoed from others in the audience.

I’m curious about the resolution of the film. Does Dhani leave the hospital with the intent of finding another donor for his father? Or are we meant to ponder his actions without getting a strong sense either way, perhaps questioning the subversive power of familial bonds?

Great performances and a great piece of work overall.

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I just saw your film on a flight home from Ottawa. What a delight to come across. You’ve made an engaging story with compelling characters. I would easily spend more time with these characters.

    Anyway,
Thanks for the work and all the best,

    Km

I saw this movie in school during English class. Our teacher used this movie to show us the difference of themes in a plot. I was extremely touched by this movie. Thanks so much. Awesome Job!

Thanks a lot! Really happy to know that it’s being shown in schools and that you felt something. A lot of us worked really hard to make it, so your comment makes it all worth it!
